Interview with Alice Jones

Can you please introduce yourself briefly?

I’m Alice, 24 year’s old and currently on my second rotation of the Graduate Specialist Programme. I graduated from the University of Liverpool last summer after completing my Bachelors of Engineering in Industrial Design.

When did you join Bosch and what was your role?

I initially joined Bosch in July 2018 before my final year of studies, for a 12 month internship. I was working in the Renault/Nissan Sales team based in Denham, responsible for Chassis System Control parts. Since completing my degree, I have recently returned to Bosch in September 2020 on the Graduate Specialist Programme.

How did you learn about Bosch’s graduate programme and what made you want to apply?

I learnt about the Graduate Specialist Programme during my placement at Bosch. There was a graduate position in my team, so I was seeing graduates come and go who had the opportunity to try various different roles. I thought this was a very attractive prospect for a graduate to have the chance to experience a wide variety of roles, locations and teams. Another reason I wanted to apply for the programme was because of the very rewarding time I spent at Bosch on my internship. During my placement year, I had many opportunities and experiences including being trusted and empowered to work independently with my own responsibilities, having lots of customer contact and multiple chances to travel. In addition to my job role, I got involved in internal events with the Women at Bosch initiative and for mental health awareness week. Working at a company that supported and encouraged these events was very enriching for me. I was also surrounded by wonderful colleagues who were kind, caring and happy to give their support and guidance, which made my experience so fulfilling and enjoyable.

When starting the graduate position had you identified key development areas which you wanted to focus on? What were they?

When starting the graduate position, I knew I wanted to make the most of every opportunity to gain as much fulfilment as possible from this programme. I was aware that it is an amazing experience, to get the chance to have 4 rotations in different areas of the business. One area of interest I wanted to explore and develop was Project Management, after having completed some modules at university. Another important aspect for me, was ensuring that I expanded my network throughout the programme. From my internship I learnt how vital and beneficial networking is, therefore, this is a key area I’m conscious of enhancing.

Were you given the opportunity to focus on them?

I have only been on the scheme for 7 months, but I have already been focusing on the areas identified. My first rotation was a Project Management role which I found very rewarding and enjoyable. This confirmed my interest in this area, and I will continue to develop this through trainings offered and future experience. Although I have been working from home for the duration of the scheme, I have still had the chance to network through various events specifically for graduates, as well as open events such as for International Women’s Day. I also take part in Lunch Roulette, which is an excellent networking tool that has allowed me to meet and talk to people in all areas. I really enjoy having these opportunities, they are always so pleasing and fulfilling. I have recently joined the mentor scheme, where with the help of my mentor I hope to identify and focus on more key development areas to help grow and progress along my career path with Bosch.

Has your graduate position at Bosch been what you expected?

Even though I am only a quarter of the way through, I have enjoyed gaining an insight into the different roles and their responsibilities. It has been very beneficial and I believe it will continue to be a fulfilling journey, which is constantly helping to develop my career path. One aspect that has been different to what I and everyone else expected, was the necessity to work from home due to unforeseen circumstances. Starting a new job among colleagues that you did not know definitely has its struggles, however it is an important learning curve which I believe has taught me to be adaptable and to always remain flexible. The Graduate Specialist Programme has taught me so much already and I look forward to continuing to learn and develop even further.

How would you rate your overall experience at Bosch?

My experience so far at Bosch has been incredibly positive and enjoyable. I believe Bosch is morally and ethically conscious towards important aspects, which I appreciate. As a company I respect their values and think they, and all of their employees, actively follow and represent these in daily activities. This is the reason I returned and am looking forward to my future Bosch adventure.
