It is important that drivers are vigilant when it comes to maintaining their vehicles. Research from the Department of Transport has shown that poor vehicle maintenance is a leading contributor to many crashes. For example, around 42 people are killed in the UK each year as a result of something as simple as not having the correct amount of tread on their tyres.
Bosch’s top five vehicle safety tips give road users a guide on some maintenance jobs they should do themselves but this should not replace regular servicing carried out by a qualified professional. Bosch would like people to take their car to their local garage to carry out preventative maintenance, rather than just waiting for something to go wrong.
Bosch Car Service’s Top 5 Vehicle Safety Tips are:
1. Wipers:
Check your wipers at least every 6 months to make sure cracks, ridges or tears in the rubber of your wipers do not reduce your visibility.
2. Tyre tread:
Replace your tyres before they reach the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6 millimetres so your vehicle’s handling and braking are not affected.
3. Oil:
It is recommended that you check your oil level at least once a week and ensure it is changed at the appropriate time using the oil recommended under the vehicle manufacturer’s specification.
4. Water:
Check your water level at least once a week to ensure it contains the specified type and amount of antifreeze to ensure the required protection.
5. Brakes: If you hear persistent grinding, squealing or clicking from your brakes see your local garage immediately.
