The Independent-Bosch Technology Horizons Award is a nationwide competition open to all students aged 14-24. The challenge this year is to write an essay under the title 'How is technology and engineering driving change in a country of your choice?' The award is in its third successful year, run by
The Independent newspaper and Bosch, and is supported by the Royal Academy of Engineering as part of its Shape The Future campaign. For all three partners, the aim of the competition is to raise the profile of engineering among young people, and encourage them to consider this field as their chosen area for studies, and a good career path.
There are two age categories, and the winners will see their article published in The Independent newspaper. Top prize for students aged 14-18 is £700, second prize is £300 and five 'High Commended' students will receive £150. Top prize in the 19-24 age group is £1,000, second prize is £500 and five 'Highly Commended' students will win £250.
Teachers entering 15 or more of their students' essays will receive a Bosch Ixo cordless screwdriver. In addition, the two schools submitting the highest number of essays will each receive £400-worth of Bosch equipment.
If they are successful, students and their teachers will be invited to a presentation ceremony in London in July 2008, to received their prizes. The competition was launched on 1st October 2007 and closes on 31 March 2008.
