Bosch was the first supplier worldwide to offer an electronically controlled, mass produced antilock braking system almost thirty years ago. The latest ABS 8.1 unit requires less space and is 20 percent lighter than previous systems, yet is more efficient and produces less pedal vibration improving driver comfort and confidence.
Driving on wet, snow or icy conditions the new Bosch ABS 8.1 system reduces stopping distances even further and because the new unit consumes less power than previous units, it reduces the power taken from the electrical system.
The first car to be fitted with an ABS was the Mercedes Benz S-Class followed shortly after by the BMW 7-Series. Since its introduction, Bosch has produced and delivered over 130 million brake control systems with the ABS function to vehicle manufacturers all over the world.
Bosch is a world leader in the development of active safety systems in vehicles. In addition to inventing ABS, the company developed Electronic Stability Program (ESP) which works in conjunction with ABS and traction control to prevent a car from skidding, one of the leading causes of accidents on the road. ESP technology is increasingly being recognised by UK motorists as an important safety feature and latest figures released by Bosch show that one in three cars sold in the UK are now fitted with ESP.
